What a Routine Visit Includes

A general dentistry visit at our office at 606 East Marshall Street in West Chester usually covers three things in one appointment:

  • Oral exam: Dr. Mina Yacoub or Dr. Robert M. Schwan checks each tooth, your gums, your bite and any existing fillings or crowns.
  • Professional cleaning: hardened tartar and plaque are removed along and just under the gumline, then your teeth are polished.
  • Oral cancer screening: a quick visual and hands-on check of the tongue, cheeks, throat and jaw.

X-rays are taken when they are due [add: the practice’s standard x-ray schedule]. If we find a cavity, early gum disease or a cracked tooth, we explain what we see and your options before any treatment starts.

What Affects the Cost of a Checkup

What you pay for a checkup and cleaning depends on a few things:

  • Your insurance: most dental plans treat exams and cleanings as preventive care, often with little or no out-of-pocket cost. [add: insurance plans the practice accepts or is in-network with]
  • Your gum health: if the gums have deep pockets, a deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) is needed instead of a regular cleaning, and it is priced differently.
  • What is due at that visit: x-rays, fluoride or sealants add to the visit when they are needed.

No insurance? The Smile Saver Plan is our in-house dental savings plan [add: what the plan includes and its annual fee]. Financing is also available for larger treatment. Ask our front desk for an estimate before you come in.

Common Questions About General Dentistry

How often should I come in? Most patients do well with a checkup and cleaning every six months. People with gum disease may need visits more often. [add: confirm the practice’s recommended interval]

Can my whole family be seen here? Yes. We treat children, teens and adults, so one office can handle everyone’s care. [add: confirm whether back-to-back family appointments can be booked]

It has been years since my last visit. Is that a problem? Not at all. Your first visit focuses on a full exam and a clear plan, with no lecture.

Do I need to live in West Chester? No. Patients come to us from Exton, Downingtown, Malvern, Kennett Square and other nearby Chester County towns.
